Hearing VS Heeding
Matthew 7:24-29. We are all building and at the close of our lives we will have built some kind of a structure called a life. It will have been built on some kind of foundation or lack of same; and it will have been built of some kind of building material. Most people will never say, "Well, I think I will build my life with dry grass on the sand." Many will never, ever give any thought to building anything on anything. By default, they build with grass on the sand. There are many others who will choose good building materials: college education, good job, family, money in the bank, etc.; but the foundation they choose or fail to choose, in the end, will not stand up. There is only one foundation that will ultimately stand the test of time and eternity and that is the person of the Lord, Jesus Christ! In another place Jesus said, "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" Luke 6:46 In today's Scripture, He is saying, I have given you instructions as to how build on the "Rock" with good materials. You need, now, to make a choice. If you pay attention and put into practice what I have said, you will be building on the "Rock" with good materials. If not, it's only sand. What "words" is Jesus talking about? He is referring to the content of the sermon that He had just finished preaching. The balance of what He taught and did is a demonstration of putting into practice the principles He has just laid out. They are about attitudes and perspective regarding God, one's self and others; about the relationship between thinking about using someone and actually doing it; about the power of our words; and about trusting God and asking Him for what we need and not worrying. Etc. Is it easy? No! But as we fall in love with Jesus and focus on Him and on pleasing Him; we will be amazed at how these things begin to fall into place.
