Everything We Need

2 Peter 1:3-11 If self-confidence could have done the job, Peter would have had it in the bag. While following Christ as a disciple, before the crucifixion, Peter thought he could handle any situation that came along. When Jesus was arrested, Peter discovered just how self-confident he wasn't. Reading these verses in this context explain why he outlines these measures in such detail. He is trying to save us who follow from having to go through the heartache of trying so hard with our own strength and failing miserably. We have everything that we need, available to us, through our knowledge of Him (Jesus) to live our lives in a godly manner in order to please Him. It was through His divine power that He made these resources available to us. They will help to keep us from falling back into the same old patterns. We are told that there are great and precious promises that are available to us so that we can participate in the divine nature and have victory over our evil desires. What he is saying is that there is supernatural help available for us. One of the problems with getting a handle on the promises of God is that we want to take advantage of them on our own terms in our own way. The promises of God are available on His terms. In verses five and following there are listed eight different character traits. These are building blocks for a godly character. If you look closely you will notice that they bear a very close resemblance to the fruit of the spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22. These come from daily walking with and depending upon God, and with His help, doing the daily "spiritual homework" that He lays out for us. Keep your eye on the goal, have the Word freshly at hand and call on Him often.
