How Is Your Lamp?
Luke 11:34 says that one's eye is the lamp of his body. Just as a lamp in one's house gives light to those in the room, so also the light that comes in through the eye gives "light " to the body. If the light is adequate then we receive accurate information about the area that we are in and we don't run into things. As it begins to get dark the information is less accurate, and things aren't what they seem to be. Verse 33 says that one will put the light on a stand so that it gives the best light possible to the room. Have you ever noticed how different lights and colors evoke different feelings. When you go to a restaurant that is painted in oranges and reds, you'll want to finish your food quickly and leave. It's planned that way so they can serve more customers. When the colors are earth tones it makes one feel relaxed and in no hurry. The kind of "light" that one wants to have shining in depends largely on what things are in their life. The things that aren't God pleasing don't welcome much light. It tends to demand a house cleaning. In fact when those kinds of things are present, there seems to be a hunger for more of the same. When the house is clean it feels so good to have the approval of God, it also make you want more of Him. Just as the tendency for things, when left to themselves, to become dirty rather than clean, so it is with the kinds of things that we let into our life. Sin like dirt needs to be dealt with on a regular basis.
