Looking For a Few Good Men
Ezekiel began his ministry in the early part of the sixth century before Christ, less than ten years before Israel was carried away into exile. Israel was corrupt from top to bottom. The kings were wicked and immoral, seeking only their own personal gain. They called on other nations for alliances, rather than on God. The priests used their offices for personal gain they cared nothing about the fact that they should be representing God. Local officials were doing their job for personal gain people were used rather than served. Even the people themselves robbed, oppressed, and mistreated, one another. The prophets who were supposed to be God's spokesmen were prophesying lies, saying the Lord said when God didn't say it. God was looking and calling for someone to "stand in the gap" for the nation so that God would not have to destroy it. He was looking for someone to stand between God and man, willing to pay whatever price was necessary to bring restoration between God and man. No one was found, you see they like us, didn't take God seriously, didn't take sin seriously, and didn't take the wickedness and the lostness of themselves and the world around them seriously. Sin, judgment and the wrath of God are serious business. It is so serious that Jesus came as the only one who could stand in the gap, and that cost His life's blood. God is still looking for people to stand in the gap so that He doesn't have to destroy this nation. People need to be awakened and made to take seriously their condition and God's provision in Christ. He's calling for people who will pray and fast and confront and share. People who are willing to pay even with their lives if necessary that a nation might be spared. It is at our door!
