Sin Hardens the Heart
Hebrews 2:12-15 Sin is a disease! It is a disease that affects the whole person - body, soul, and spirit. It affects 100% of all peoples. It is 100% fatal. Sin is a disease from which the vast majority of people on the planet have no desire whatever to be healed from. The manifestations of the disease, at least in the beginning, bring much pleasure; and if it brings pleasure, why would anyone ever want to be healed? The most insidious side effects of this disease are unbelief and hardening of the heart. A word we often hear today, "denial", is just another way to describe unbelief. Our Scripture today says. "See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God." (Verse 12) Sin turns us away from God. When a deaf person turns his head away from you, you've been turned off, there is no more communication. When we turn away from God, communication ceases and we are left to handle the pleasures and the consequences of our sin by ourselves. In turning away from God, we've decided to reject the only possible cure for the eternally fatal disease. When the children of Israel were In Egypt, in slavery, they called out to God for rescue because they were in such bondage. When God rescued them and brought them out of Egypt, they very quickly forgot how oppressive Egypt really was. More Important, they forgot that it was God who responded to their cries and brought them out. God never told them how wonderful the desert was and that it should be enjoyed for its own sake. Their gratitude should be in the fact that they were out of Egypt and on their way to the real home that God had intended all along. The deceitfulness of sin tells us that what we have here is "as good as it gets" - "get while the getting is good". The truth is that we are not home yet, this Is not the final destination that God intends for us. We are only on our way.
