The Harvest is Plentiful, but the Workers are Few

Luke 10. 1-20. A wise farmer does not look over his crop that is ready to harvest and ignore it and let it rot on the vines. He will make the necessary investments in equipment and personnel and get the crop out of the field and into the market place - that's why he's in the farming business. When Jesus talked about the harvest being plentiful, He wasn't talking about wheat or soy beans, He was talking about people. People who were dying in their sins, who had tried everything else and were ready to listen to something that worked. That kind of situation has been in existence since the beginning of time. The ugly truth is that millions have died in the fields, ready to be harvested, but never got to hear the truth. Even more painful is the fact that they are still dying in the same condition as we speak. A farmer does not attempt to gather a crop before it's ready to be harvested. How often do we become frustrated with people who don't want to believe, who don't want to listen, and who just want to argue - they are just not ripe yet. You'll find that if you go to the ones that are willing and anxious to listen, there just won't be enough of you to go around. That's exactly why Jesus said, "pray that the Lord of the harvest will send out workers into His harvest field." Notice that there is a two-pronged command here - Pray and Go. All too often we pray with the idea that we want God to send someone else, after all we are too busy praying. We need to have the mind of Isaiah (Isaiah 6) when God said, "whom shall I send and who will go for us." Isaiah said, "Here am I, send me."
