The Legacy of a Godly Mother
2Timothy 1:3-7 Timothy was a native of Lystra, a city in Asia Minor, now known as Turkey. Timothy's Mother was a Jew and his Father was a Greek. There is no record of the conversion of his Father, but his Grandmother Lois and his Mother Eunice and he had been converted on one of Paul's missionary journeys. Paul's second letter to Timothy implies that the state of Timothy's faith was a result of his Grandmother's and his Mother's faith. Even though Timothy was probably an older youth when his Mother was converted, she was still able to have a profound impact on his life. God has placed within mothers an instinct to preserve, protect and nurture her children. To reject or abort is not a normal situation and the fact that there is so much of it happening is proof that the enemy is powerfully at work today. Maybe we can't stop him in the world at large, but we don't have to let him win in the way we conduct our personal lives before the Lord and in how we raise our children. A father has a responsibility and an opportunity to greatly aid in the nurturing process, but in so many cases he is just not there. A mother is often alone or almost so in the process. Just imagine what a mother who has Jesus in her heart and has a living relationship with God can instill in the lives of her children, especially if she bathes them in constant prayer. The teen time may be shaky, but if you've filled them with the good things of the Lord as they were growing up you can pray them through to the other side. What if you don't find the Lord until after the children are a little older? Don't ever underestimate the power of prayer and living a godly example before them. Consider Timothy in our Scripture today. What if they have already grown up and left home. James tells us the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective
