Why Mary?

Luke 1:26 38 What was in Mary that God would choose her to bear His Son? It certainly wasn't because of her social position. Was it simply a matter of the right genealogy? The genealogy was certainly important, but there were others that could have fulfilled that part. Was the genealogy of Joseph the deciding factor? Even though Joseph was not the father, being a descendent of David was important because he would help raise the child. Even that was certainly not the deciding factor. I believe that God saw in Mary the kind of character that, with His help, could accomplish the task. On the one side it is certainly in error to elevate Mary to a position that Scripture never gives her. On the other hand, it is equally in error to make her a nothing. Even though she needed salvation just like the rest of us, she was greatly blessed. She was a person of moral character, a virgin, who was engaged to man named Joseph. She was able to hear the message without going into shock. She was able to receive it. and she was able to believe it. After the experience when Jesus stayed behind in the temple she kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. At the wedding in Cana she said, "whatever He (Jesus) tells you to do, do it." She is seen waiting patiently at the cross. Finally, she is seen as a participant in the upper room at Pentecost.
