A Matter of Choice

Psalm 1:1-6. Unless one is in prison or a similar situation, he has a choice as to where he chooses to be. Even in prison, one still may choose how is mind will be occupied. Psalm 1 begins with three down-hill steps to destruction. The first is “walking in the counsel of the wicked.” You began listening to the advice and exploits of wicked (those living contrary to the will and character of God). You watch it, admire the life style, and begin to dabble in it. Then one moves to the second stage, “to stand in the way of sinners.” You go along with the program, you’re a follower, that’s where you begin to spend most of your time. Finally, you "sit in the seat of the mockers.” It speaks of total involvement, not only are you a participant, you’re an instigator and a perpetrator. You’ve gone from being a user to a pusher. The real force of Psalm 1 is that the one who does not go that route is blessed. He keeps himself involved with God, His Word and His people. The result for this man is that he is like the tree on the river bank, the nourishment is always at hand. He bears good and timely fruit and does not waver in his stand. Whatever he does comes out well, because his ear is tuned to the will of God and God works in and through him. The wicked have no such stability. Today they’re on top of the world. Tomorrow another is in their place. Today you have a choice. Where will you walk, stand and sit?
