Hold On
Hebrews 10:32-39 Have you ever gotten to a point in your life when you've said, "No one cares, no one understands, how can I possibly go on?" Jesus disciples were in that position when Jesus had given them an especially difficult teaching. Many of His followers were beginning to fall away. Jesus asked His twelve, "Will you also leave." They replied, "Where can we go, you have the words of eternal life." Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where we feel like we are over our heads, sometimes we’ve done it to ourselves, and sometimes it is just the "rain that falls on the good and the bad." Sometimes it’s because we live in a wicked world that can’t stand to see the church survive, let alone succeed. The Scripture that we’re looking at today comes from a time after Jesus had returned to heaven. The newness of their salvation was behind and the pressures of those who were trying to convince them to return to life under the law of Moses was increasing. One can imagine the logic: our people have followed the law of Moses for hundreds of years and it seemed good enough for them. Jesus was great and had a great plan, but he’s gone and who knows when he’s returning - if he is. The writer of Hebrews reminds them how they had endured and suffered so much and stood by others in the same position, because they were waiting for something far better. He encourages them to hold on and not give up. The One they are waiting for will in fact soon come. He’s coming for His righteous ones — those who are living by faith. The believing ones are those who are acting on what they believe and not what they see or hear. Remember when Noah built the ark no one had ever heard of rain. Jesus is returning, hold on, don't give up.
