Integrity even when It hurts
Psalm 15:1-5 Integrity to a person is essentially what “truth in packaging" is to things on the market. “What you see is what you get.” “You are what you say you are." “Your walk equals your talk.” When the Bible talks about not taking God’s name in vain, it includes far more than just using God’s name in your cursing. If we attach God’s Name and reputation to our words, our attitudes, or our behavior and then we conduct ourselves with no intention of holding His Name in holiness and above reproach, then we have taken His name in vain. We take a rather dim view of others who claim to be acting in our behalf who lie and cheat in the process. Notice what the Psalmist says about those who want to live in relationship with God (“LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill?”). The one who is upright in every area of his/her life. It includes your actions, your words, your attitudes, and your finances. Our words and behavior when we are not in the presence of God and/or others need to be consistent with how we are while in their presence. In other words, don’t worship God and make promises to Him and then live like you never knew Him. Don’t be nice to someone when they are there and then stick a knife in their back after they leave. The verse that really caught my eye was the second part of verse 4, “who keeps his oath even when it hurts." The promises we make are important for us to keep, even when it becomes inconvenient, causes embarrassment or costs us money. Sounds next to impossible? It is if we intend to try in our own strength. A lifestyle as described depends on a consistent, day by day relationship with God through Christ. He gives us the ability as we day by day live in dependence on Him.
