Jesus The Thirst Quencher
John 7:37-39 In New Testament times, during the Feast of Tabernacles, part of the ceremony consisted of drawing water from the pool of Siloam and pouring it into a silver basin by the altar. This was done the first seven days of the feast. Jesus stands on the eighth day and offers Himself as the source of living water to the thirsty. Some of those who heard recognized the connection and said, “Surely this is the Prophet”. When a person is thirsty, he will find something to drink. I remember when I was in Boot Camp in San Diego in the 50’s, and we at the rifle range in the middle of an especially hot day with no water. Some of the men began to drink water they had drained from the truck radiators - fortunately there was no antifreeze in them. When you are thirsty for something to fulfill your life, you’ll find no end of things offered to satisfy your thirst. Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount, “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled.” Jesus offered the Samaritan woman at the well Living Water so that she would never thirst again. Here at the feast, He is offering Himself as living Water, water that doesn’t stand still and stagnate, but that is always moving, fresh, and abundant. He said that the one who believes would have the Holy Spirit inside, who would be the source of rivers of living waters that would flow from within. When you’re thirsty, let Jesus be your only thirst quencher. Remember just as sweets can spoil your appetite, so can the lying tidbits of Satan. Stick with the Real Thing - Jesus.
