Life is Precious

Psalm 139:1-18 Today is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. It marks the 27th anniversary of the Roe VS Wade Supreme Court decision to legalize abortion. Since that time many millions of lives have been needlessly and brutally ended. The Bible would indicate that God has an opinion on the matter. Psalm 139:13-16 “For you created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” People certainly have a part in the creation of a new human being, but according to these verses and others, it is God who has the plan and does the creating. Even before our part was initiated, God already had a plan laid out for the person being conceived. Procreation is like one of the checks that one receives in the mail. It is a real check, but if you sign and cash it, you are also signing up for the offer that the check represents. If you choose not to cash it, you have no responsibility in the matter. We as people have the ability to act in concert with God and participate in the creation of a new life. If we never choose to exercise that ability, we have no responsibility for the new life since there was none created. If we “cash the check” and a new life is conceived, then by definition we have agreed to allow God to work out His plan in the creative process, and to join Him as agents in the process. All human life is sacred to God, even the lives of those who may for one reason or another participated in ending the life of the unborn. There is forgiveness. Our God is a god of reconciliation — not willing that any should perish.
