Becoming accountable
Ephesians 5:8-21 Accountability is not a popular subject, after all who wants to have to go around explaining himself to someone else. Isn't this a free country and isn't it best to do your own thing and work your own program. There are many areas that we are required to give account. To the officer who stops you for a violation, to the judge, to the IRS at tax audit time, etc. Besides all this we will be required to give an account before God. Jesus tells us in Mat. 12:36 that we must give an account of every idle word that we have spoken. Our text in Eph. 5:10 tells us to find out what the will of the Lord is. We need to make it our business to find out. In verse 18 we are told to understand what the will of the Lord is. It seems like the more closely we walk with the Lord, the more continuously He holds us accountable. A key ingredient in the idea of accountability is submission. It is where we give another the right to tell us what to do in a certain area, and we follow their advice. The Scripture tells us to submit to God, submit to leadership, and even to submit to one another. Submission doesn't tell us to stop thinking. Just as we submit to another, they in turn submit to us. Not one of us has all the answers, but together we have the mind of Christ. Together we are a team. Together we are the body of Christ.
