Solid Food, Righteousness, & Maturity
Hebrews 5:7-6:3 Jesus has paved the way for us in our spiritual walk with Him. Although He prayed in the garden that "the cup" be taken away, He also prayed that the will of the Father be done. The Gospel of Luke tells us that as He prayed an angel came and strengthened Him (Luke 22:43). Hebrews tells us that He was heard because of His reverent submission and He was delivered from death in the resurrection. It says that He learned obedience through what He suffered. As God He was perfect, but yet He never had experienced obedience as a man going through human situations. By doing it, He made it possible for us to do the same. The writer of Hebrews would like to go much deeper but, you're "slow to learn." Adam Clark puts it like this: "slow to learn" signifies a person who walks heavily and makes little speed, it is here elegantly applied to those who are called to the Christian race, have the road laid down plain before them, how to proceed specified, and the blessings to be obtained enumerated, and yet make no exertions to get on, but are always learning, and never able to come to the full knowledge of the truth." It is all about putting into practice the things we are putting into our heads. One can be a genius in knowledge of the words and be an idiot when it comes to putting them into practical living situations. That's why James tells us to be doers of the Word and not hearers only. You want to graduate to "meat"? then let the teachings of the Word make a difference in the way you walk.
