Some Iffy Certainties
Proverbs 2:1-8 Do you really want to know God and have a relationship that has real meaning? If you do, there are some “ifs” involved. This does not offer a formula for those who desire to become a Christian. He's speaking to those who are already in the family — “My son.” The principle of sowing and reaping is at the heart, i.e., the benefits that you receive depends on the effort that you invest. “If you accept My Words and store up My commands within you...” I need to acknowledge that these words that He is speaking, He is saying to me. They are not for someone else, or just going out into the air. They contain important instructions, insight and information and directions intended for me, and I need to take them seriously. I also need to put some effort into remembering them. Ever notice how, when you speak, a dog will rotate his ears toward you so that he can be focused and hear exactly what you are saying. Ever listen intently to pick a certain sound or voice out of the confusion of sound around you. I believe that this is what God is trying to say. The goal is wisdom and understanding as we seek to apply His Words that we have stored to our daily walk. Verse three implies a continual communication with the author of the Words. As you go, “if you call out for insight — if you cry aloud for understanding.” We get so into the “same old - same old” that we forget that although we’ve done this same “trip” day after day; we have never made today’s “trip" before. Today is unique. Search for the treasure of wisdom and understanding in it. “Then you will understand the fear of the Lord.” which is something grasped experientially and not intellectually, i.e., it is an experience with feelings and emotions and awareness that can’t be described with words. It is very much like trying to find the words to describe a sunrise or a rainbow to a blind person or a symphony to someone who has never heard.
