What Do You Think?
Matthew 21:28-32 Have you ever thought about why you do what you do or why you make the decisions that you do? Have you ever tried to put yourself into the situations that Jesus describes and think about what you would have done, or have done in similar situations? Or, when you’ve observed someone else’s response to a request or order, have said, “I would never have done it that way." only to find that that’s exactly what you yourself have done? Jesus asks His hearers to think about two sons. Both given the same command. Each with a different response. One rebelliously said no. The other obediently said yes. Both did the opposite of what they had said. Jesus question was then, “Which one did the will of his father? Was it the words of the answer? Or, was it the ultimate action that was taken? How often have we given a good answer of obedience and yet when it came down to actually performing what we had agreed to do, somehow it didn’t get done. We either changed our mind, or forgot, or something else “more important” came up. We do this with people; but I wonder how much more often we do it with God? I’m going to witness more, read my Bible, pray more regularly; but somehow it just doesn’t seem to happen. Perhaps at the close of a Sunday morning service, the Holy Spirit convicts us that we need to make restitution or apologize in some situation or another; but as time goes on, we put it off for so long that we forget. Read Matthew 7:21 where Jesus said, "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord, 'will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven” Just as the son who later repented and changed his mind and did what his father had asked; so we also can repent and begin doing what we know we should be doing. Think about it!
