Let A Man Examine Himself
I Cor. 11:28 God takes seriously the condition of our heart. Although it is very nice to have clean clothes and a clean body, and these things are important; what is on the inside is of much greater importance. Jesus said that it is not what goes into a man that defiles him but what comes out. What comes out is a product of the "treasures" that have been stored away on the inside. Sometimes it is not until times of stress, anger, and frustration that these "treasures" surface. Where did that come from? Hopefully they are still stray pieces that are left over from our pre-Christ days. All too often they are products of a secret ongoing appetite for ungodly things and/or nursing of grudges that we have no right to hang on to. When we celebrate the Lord's Supper, we are remembering the awesome price that was required to take away our sins. The very things that we harbor as "treasures", are the very things that made the execution of the cross necessary. It doesn't say “don't eat", but it does stress the importance of taking out the garbage first. Let's begin replacing that old treasure with God honoring attitudes and habits. Psalm 139:23-24.
