Christmas, the Panorama

Luke 2:1-20 The Scripture today shows us a snapshot of how God put together a number of totally unrelated situations to bring about His plan. Romans 8:28 describes it: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Notice how well the Roman census for taxation fit so nicely into the picture. At just the right time it moved Jesus, who was the "Bread If Life" to be born in Bethlehem the "house of bread". It made it possible for Jesus to be carried about 5 miles to Jerusalem to be circumcised rather than the 65 miles from Nazareth. Jesus was circumcised, dedicated and crucified in the very spot where Abraham offered Isaac and God provided the substitute. The shepherds who were keeping the flocks that would be used to offer for the sins of the people were invited by the Angelic Hosts to visit the good shepherd who came, not only to care for His sheep, but also to offer Himself as a sacrificial lamb for the sins of the people. God chose a stable in which to deliver the King of kings. There, all people could have access, from shepherds to kings. If He had been born in a palace only a few would be able to get in. Luke 2:19 illustrates an attitude of heart that I believe God honors and blesses - "But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart." I don't think she was trying to understand because it just wasn't possible. I believe she just savored the awe and wonder of what God had done in and through her.
