Excuses, Excuses

Luke 14:15 24 It's not hard to find an excuse for something that you really don't want to do. There are even some that would seem rather convincing. The parable in the scripture seems to indicate Jesus' attitude toward excuses. The parable tells about a person who planned a great banquet and invited a lot of people. When the time came for the banquet, everyone had an excuse why he couldn't come. One might wonder why someone would pass up free food. It becomes a little easier when we learn that He's comparing the invitation to the banquet with an invitation to God's kingdom. At first thought who would pass up an opportunity to eternal life. In our experience in sharing the Gospel, many have "real good reasons" why they don't want to accept Christ. One very important thing to notice is that the banqueting house will be full. The ones whom Jesus came to save, His Jewish brothers, were the first to reject Him. He wasn't what they had expected that He should be, so they didn't want Him. Jesus' message is the same today. If the dignified, proper folks won't respond, then go to the streets and find the poor, crippled, blind and lame. When all those have come, and the hall still isn't full go into the countryside and make them come in. Our neighborhood is full of this very kind. Consider which is worse finding an excuse not to come in or one not to go out and invite others.
